TEENS MAY BENEFIT FROM LATER SCHOOL START TIMES

A study in the journal Sleep showed that middle- and high-school students had 31 minutes and 48 minutes longer sleep on school nights a year after their school start times were delayed by 50 minutes and 70 minutes, respectively. The findings, to be presented at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, also associated later school start times to reduced rates of homework sleepiness, as well as significantly increased academic engagement among youths.
